Water Softener Not Regenerating: Evidence-First Checks

If your water softener is not regenerating, first determine whether a regeneration was actually due and whether it was merely queued, requested, started, interrupted or completed. Then preserve the exact model, controller status, clock, error, power, service/bypass position and flow evidence before resetting anything. Only request one regeneration when the exact official manual permits it and there is no leak, overflow, wet electricity, damaged connection, continuous unexplained drain or stalled-cycle condition.
A missing overnight sound or an unchanged salt level does not by itself prove that the control failed to regenerate. Demand-initiated systems can wait until enough hardness load has accumulated; a calendar system or day override follows different rules. A button press can queue a later event rather than start one immediately. A completed event can also fail to restore soft-water performance for reasons unrelated to initiation.
Do not force-advance stages, repeatedly recharge, open the control head, disconnect tubing or test live/internal electrical components from this guide. Motor, meter, board, switch, wiring, piston, seals and pressurized valve work belong to qualified service under the exact manual.
Event rule: Separate due, queued, requested, started and completed. Those are different states. Preserve the controller evidence before resetting it, and request at most one exact-manual cycle when the installation is safe and the result will be observed.
Stop before troubleshooting an unsafe condition
Stop normal troubleshooting and route the condition to appropriate service when you see:
- active leakage, overflow or standing water;
- water near the plug, transformer, controller or wiring;
- a cracked tank, valve, fitting or unsupported plumbing;
- continuous drain flow outside a documented regeneration stage;
- a cycle that appears stuck and will not return to service;
- repeated error codes after the condition was documented;
- burning odor, heat, arcing, damaged cord or an unsafe outlet; or
- freeze, impact, contamination or unknown chemical evidence.
Do not touch wet electrical equipment. If safe and within your competence, prevent access to the area and follow the manufacturer's emergency or bypass guidance. Do not operate an unidentified bypass or close a valve serving an unknown critical branch. Photograph the display and visible condition from a safe position, note the time and call the manufacturer, installer, plumber or service technician.
Stop rules override every diagnostic step below. The goal is not to make the system move at any cost; it is to identify the last safe, verifiable state.
Confirm whether regeneration was actually due
Cation-exchange resin must be regenerated to restore softening capacity, but timing depends on the controller and the accumulated load. The EPA WaterSense softener guide connects regeneration need to incoming hardness, water demand and usable capacity. A demand-initiated unit may not cycle during a low-use period.
From the exact manual and current settings, record:
- demand-initiated, time-clock or other operating mode;
- incoming/compensated hardness setting and its source;
- usable capacity or remaining gallons/grains display;
- reserve rule and day override, if applicable;
- last completed regeneration date/time;
- current scheduled or queued indicator;
- recent water use, vacancy, bypass or plumbing changes; and
- any manual or remote requests.
Do not conclude “overdue” using a universal number of days. If the model uses measured demand, compare controller gallons with known treated-water use. If it uses a schedule, compare the actual clock/day and programmed schedule. If definitions are unclear, mark the result “due status unknown” and seek exact-model support.
Use the frequent-regeneration guide when cycles are occurring but at an unexpected rate; this article is for an event that appears absent or incomplete.
Separate queued, requested, started and completed
Record the event in cycle-evidence-log.csv. Use only the strongest state supported by evidence:

A recharge button may mean “tonight,” “hold to start,” “queue second cycle” or something else depending on model. Do not copy the timing or button sequence from another controller.
Preserve timestamps. An event history, regeneration counter, remaining-capacity display or status icon can be useful, but its definition still comes from the exact manual. Do not clear an error or reset the controller before capturing it unless the manufacturer directs an immediate safety action.
Record power, clock and controller status
From a dry, owner-accessible position:
- confirm the display is on and note every character/icon;
- record the current clock, day and any flashing state;
- note recent outages, unplugging, breaker trips or transformer changes;
- verify only that the normal plug/transformer appears connected as designed;
- record an error code before any reset; and
- compare the display behavior with the exact manual.
Pentair's residential filtration FAQ tells owners who suspect failure to regenerate to check power, bypass and whether the meter counts gallons for the unit. Those are distinct observations, not a generic repair sequence.
Do not open an electrical enclosure, measure live voltage, bypass a switch, splice wires, replace a board or substitute a transformer based on this article. An outlet or transformer test may be assigned to an electrician or technician depending on the installation and manual. A blank display can reflect power supply, controller or another cause; it does not identify the failed part.
If an outage changed the clock, document both the observed and corrected value. Correct the time only if the exact manual clearly assigns that action to the owner; do not change hardness, capacity, mode or calibration at the same time.
Confirm service/bypass and flow evidence
A softener in bypass may deliver untreated water even if its controller is operating. A demand-initiated controller that does not see treated-water flow may never reach its trigger. Identify the installed plumbing diagram and valve labels before touching anything.
Record:
- service/bypass position as defined by the exact model/installation;
- whether a known downstream fixture is on the treated branch;
- controller flow indicator or gallon-count change during a short known use;
- starting/ending meter values and units;
- whether the display changes when all known fixtures are off; and
- recent valve, meter, plumbing or installation work.
Do not use whole-property consumption if outdoor or other branches bypass the softener without labeling that limitation. Do not infer a failed meter from one tiny flow that may be below the controller's display resolution. Repeat only a safe, normal fixture observation and preserve the result.
If the controller shows unexplained continuous flow, check for household leaks. If it does not count known treated-water use or counts with corroborated no-use, route the meter/controller branch to service. Do not remove or spin a turbine, disconnect a cable or alter meter programming.
Keep salt and bridge evidence separate from initiation
No salt, a suspected bridge or abnormal brine behavior can prevent effective regeneration, but it does not by itself prove the controller failed to initiate a cycle. Conversely, an event counter can increase even when brine draw or performance is inadequate.
From a safe position, record:
- salt level, product and last addition;
- whether a bridge was confirmed only under the exact manual;
- visible brine/liquid condition at a comparable cycle point;
- salt use across completed cycles;
- untreated and treated hardness; and
- any overflow, continuous drain, unexpected odor or damaged line.
Use the not-using-salt guide for the brine/salt branch and the salt-bridge guide for its model-controlled physical check. Do not add chemicals, hot water or repeated bags of salt as a substitute for event evidence.
If the controller never starts despite a valid trigger, salt condition may be secondary. If the cycle completes but hardness persists, performance and brine-draw branches become primary.
Request one exact-manual cycle only when safe
One documented request can distinguish “no automatic trigger” from “cannot start” or “starts but cannot complete.” It is appropriate only when:
- no stop condition exists;
- the exact model, controller and official manual are confirmed;
- the manual assigns a manual regeneration request to the owner;
- drain and surrounding area are safe and observable;
- the system is not already regenerating or queued in a conflicting state; and
- repeated cycles have not already been attempted.
Before the request, capture display, time, remaining capacity/gallons, settings, bypass/service state, salt/brine observation, errors and drain state. Follow the exact command. Do not use a button sequence from this or another article.
Observe without force-advancing stages:
- whether the request was accepted and when it is scheduled;
- actual start timestamp and displayed stage;
- whether an error appears;
- external leaks or unexpected drain behavior;
- completion/return to documented service; and
- post-cycle treated-hardness result after the manual-defined sampling condition.
The manual-regeneration guide provides a reusable record, but the controller manual remains controlling. Stop if the cycle leaks, overflows, stalls, produces unsafe electrical conditions or does not return to service. Do not trigger another cycle to “unstick” it.
Distinguish no start, stall and no performance recovery
These outcomes require different handoffs:
- Request not accepted: preserve button/display behavior, lockout, error and exact manual section.
- Accepted but not started at the documented time: preserve schedule, clock, queue, power and controller state.
- Started but stalled/interrupted: preserve stage, elapsed time, error, drain and power evidence; stop repeats.
- Completed but no salt/brine evidence: route brine-fill/draw/drain observations to service.
- Completed but treated hardness remains outside criterion: verify sample points/method, bypass, load/settings and service performance.
- Completed and performance restored: monitor the next automatic trigger; the original automatic-event question may remain unresolved.
Do not call a cycle “successful” solely because the display returned to the clock. Define success as a completed event plus safe return to service and a relevant measured outcome.

Route internal causes to qualified service
Manufacturer troubleshooting tables show why “not regenerating” is not one failed part. The Pentair whole-house manual lists, for that product family, possible electrical supply, control, drive motor, flow meter, computer board and microswitch causes. The Pentair 5600SXT manual supplies different controller-specific diagnostics.
Those tables are evidence for multiple branches, not owner repair permission. Do not:
- replace the motor, board, meter or switch;
- open the valve body or controller enclosure;
- remove seals, piston, cam, injector or drain controls;
- disconnect pressurized, brine or drain lines;
- bypass safety/position switches; or
- perform live electrical testing.
Ask service to test the trigger, power supply, controller configuration, meter input, motor/position feedback, valve movement, brine stages and return to service. Require before/after settings and a documented acceptance result.
Build the technician handoff
Complete no-regeneration-checklist.csv, cycle-evidence-log.csv and the non-invasive sequence. Include:
- exact softener/controller model and official manual revision;
- symptom first observed and why a cycle was considered due;
- event classification with timestamps;
- clock, queue, remaining capacity/gallons and error evidence;
- safe power observation and outage history;
- service/bypass and treated-flow evidence;
- salt, bridge and brine observations kept as separate fields;
- untreated/treated hardness, method, units and sample points;
- result of the one exact-manual request, if performed; and
- current safe state and stop condition.
Ask for the diagnosed failed function/component, test performed, part availability, warranty status, settings before/after and acceptance criteria. If the recommended work is substantial, use the repair-or-replace decision only after that diagnosis exists.
Frequently asked questions
How many days can a softener go without regenerating?
There is no universal interval. It depends on the operating mode, water demand, incoming hardness, usable capacity, reserve and any day override. Determine from the exact manual and current settings whether the controller actually considered a cycle due, rather than counting days since the last one.
Does an unchanged salt level prove no regeneration?
No. You need completed-event evidence and a comparable salt observation window, because a cycle can be absent, incomplete or ineffective for different reasons. The reverse also holds: a completed cycle that leaves water hard points to bypass, settings, load, brine draw or resin, not to initiation.
Can I unplug and reset the softener?
Preserve the display, error code, clock and event state first, then follow only the exact manual. Do not reset wet or damaged electrical equipment. If an outage changed the clock, document both the observed and corrected values, and do not change hardness, capacity or mode at the same time.
Should I start a manual recharge?
At most one documented request may be useful when the exact manual permits it and no stop condition exists. Do not repeat requests or force stages. If the cycle starts but never finishes, treat it as stalled: preserve the stage, error and timestamps, stop repeating, and call qualified service.
